Again, I felt the same tinge of guilty after this visit because I really have not heard of Life technologies before. Life technologies specialise in many different areas, and the plant we visited on Monday is in charge of building PCRs (machines which replicates and multiplies DNA strands and is used in hospitals or crime-busting laboratories). At first I did not know anything about PCRs, but the staff there are very experienced and answered all of my questions and inquiries in a simple manner and by the end of the day I knew how the PCR worked.
From this trip, I have come to realise the importance of teamwork in our lives. Life technologies divides its staff into different groups and sectors, which are in charge of manufacturing or building different parts of a machine along the production chain, and the employees have to get along well with each other to ensure efficiency. I was told that cross-continental meetings were held on a regular basis (as Life technologies have many firms all around the world), and the biggest challenge of these meetings would be the interaction process, as the staff have to make extra effort to tolerate and accept cultural differences. With the accelerating progress of globalization, perhaps cross-continental meetings could even be held on a daily basis as traditional boundaries are broken and blurring. I am relieved by the fact that project work is heavily emphasized in hwa chong, and I hope to be fully prepared to embrace that future possibility!
I feel especially heartened at the altruistic aims of Life technologies, since the company aspires to improve lives in this world. The development of the PCR, for example, allows criminal investigators to be more efficient in crime-busting and crime-solving; hence ensuring the prevailence of justice within society and allows all of us to reside in a safe environment. I think that is the true essence of science and development. We must not only exploit it to benefit ourselves; but rather, we should leverage science for the betterment of society. I am really elated that so many companies like Life technologies are dedicated to benefitting mankind.
Yes science concepts are also at work at Life technologies. Core concepts such as experimentation and the formulation of a hypothesis were infused into their research work.
I have really benefitted a lot from this visit, not to mention the good food, but I have also gained a deeper insight into the true meaning behind research and development. At the same time, thank you for preparing the workshop regarding product 'synthesis' as I have learned much more about business, innovation, and most importantly, about the corporate world. Thank you life technologies for improving our lives, and we hope that you will continue your good work!
